Head of School’s Corner

Katherine Fedalen Named Chelsea’s Head of School

Dear Chelsea Community,

Following a unanimous vote, the Board of Governors of The Chelsea School is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Katherine (Kate) Fedalen M.Ed. as Head of School for The Chelsea School effective July 1, 2012.

Ms. Fedalen has been committed to the mission of The Chelsea School since joining in 1989 and has served the school in various capacities, including; special education classroom teacher for 16 years, Middle Division Head for eight years, Assistant Head of Chelsea School for six years, and one year as the Interim Head of School. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, a contributing author to Models of Applied Research in Educational Technology and a frequent presenter at MANSEF’s annual conference. Kate has been recognized by NAIS’s “Stars in Education” and was nominated for MANSEF’s “Inspiring Dream, Changing Lives” award.

During Ms. Fedalen’s tenure as the Interim Head of School, Chelsea made tremendous strides and achieved many outstanding accomplishments. Under her leadership, Chelsea established a new Dean of Students position, was included into the National Honor Society, selected a Head of the Upper School Division, selected a Careers and Transition Coordinator, increased parental involvement, established a balanced budget, increased alumni outreach that included graduates from 1979, produced a 100% graduation rate, posted nearly a 90% college acceptance rate, developed a culture of giving through fundraising, and developed consensus among the Chelsea community in determining the priorities for relocation sites for the new Chelsea School.

This past year, Kate has received unwavering support from the faculty and staff. Additionally, the membership of the Chelsea Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has provided valuable input to the Board of Governors regarding her overall performance and their extremely sincere vote of confidence.

According to Board Co-Chair, Darryl Brewer, “The decision to remove the Interim title was largely based on her years of experience at the school and overall competency in the core areas of school leadership.” The Board recognizes the special combination of experience, talent and vision that Ms. Fedalen brings to the role of Head of School and her ability to lead Chelsea. Kate has an authentic connection with all the members of the Chelsea Community and has developed healthy, collaborative relationships that are vital to school leadership.

As a board, we feel that Kate will continue to prioritize student learning, teacher professional development, and parent support for the instructional mission of the school. Please join us in celebrating the naming of Ms. Katherine Fedalen as our new Head of School.
