English 9 is a four unit class with an overarching theme of Mirrors and Windows. The context by which a student will approach the study language and literature will be through language which forces both self reflection, the mirror, and look at the outside world, the window.  Writing will be challenged to articulate and express them selves through the written word.  The texts chosen for this course will frame the discussion and analysis for the student.

The theme for English 10 is Journeys.  The students will explore the concept of journeys through literature and written language.  Reading, analyzing, and explicating literature will function as a tool and a bridge to advanced critical thinking and application of constructs.  The continued support and development of both written and oral communication will be stressed throughout the course.  The texts chosen for this course will frame the discussion and analysis for the student. Upon successful completion of the course students must take the Maryland High School English Assessment.

Algebraic Concepts is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of algebra and data analysis at a pace conducive to their learning style.  The course serves to ground students with an understanding of algebra so that they may be successful in Algebra I.

Algebra I introduces students to the language and abstract concepts of algebra.  The teacher guides students with the application of the algebraic language to solve real world problems. Upon successful completion of the course students must take the Maryland High School Assessment of Algebra and Data Analysis.

Principles of Algebra and Geometry

Principles of Algebra and Geometry, is a specialized course for students who have successfully met the course standards of algebra, but require continued development of the skills to demonstrate mastery on a consistent basis.  Additionally, the course provides students with an introduction to basic geometric concepts from an algebraic perspective an at a pace conducive to each learning style

Geometry

Geometry introduces students to the skills needed to solve problems by applying the tools of geometry, geometric proofs, and formulas.  Students study geometric properties in two dimensions, as well as basic formulas of trigonometry.  Additionally, students are introduced to the mathematical applications of both inductive and deductive reasoning.

Consumer Math

Consumer Math reinforces the basic concepts of Algebra and Geometry in their most common applications of personnel finance and economics.  The skill sets students develop in the class are meant to provide practical in their daily lives beyond Chelsea School.

Algebra II builds off of the concepts and language introduced in Algebra I.  Students work to develop their understanding of the abstract concepts so that they may become successful independently applying algebra as a problem solving tool.

Calculus I will provide an introduction to the core concepts of calculus.  The course will introduce each student to the basic problems and tools of calculus so that they may understand who these structures are used to solve real world problems.

Matter and Energy introduces students to basic principles in chemistry and physics.  Students learn how to apply the scientific method to solve problems and design experiments. The Chemistry section of the course introduces students to matter, atomic structure, the Periodic Table, chemical reactions, and carbon compounds. The Physics section covers forces and motion, work, power, energy, waves, light, electricity, and magnetism.

Earth and Space Science

Earth and Space Science introduces students to astronomy and geology. Students first learn about stars and galaxies that make up the universe. The earth science section introduces students to Planet Earth, its environment, systems, and cycles. Students develop an understanding of their impact on the earth and the role of natural cycles and systems.

Biology I

The Biology I course introduces students to how living things function, develop, and interact with the environment. Topics to be studied include the structure and function of the cell, cellular processes, ecology, and genetics. Upon successful completion of the course, Maryland students must take the High School Biology Assessment.

Biology II Human Anatomy and Physiology

The Biology II course introduces students to human anatomy and physiology. Students will gain an understanding of the structure and function of their own bodies and learn how to prevent disease. Dissection is an important part of this course.

This course is designed to give students a basic understanding of Chemical Theory and its principles. Laboratory experiences are designed to familiarize students with chemical reactions and to help them develop skills in using chemicals and equipment associated with the chemistry laboratory.

DC History is a curriculum requirement for all District of Columbia students.  The course is designed to give students an understanding of the unique geography, history and culture of the District of Columbia.  Additionally it stresses the evolution of the city as both the capital of the United States as well as a modern urban and cultural center.

The senior careers course provides guidance and instruction to students as they progress towards graduation and life beyond Chelsea School. The students spend the year preparing for and taking SAT’s, researching and applying to college, learning and practicing daily living skills such as budgeting and employment.  The skills addressed in this course also serve to meet IEP transition goals.

Reading Tutorial

Reading tutorials are provided to students who need significant and continued support to master the deficits in their reading skills.  These tutorials are individualized to each student’s specific need, and students are grouped together based on their profiles.  The reading tutorial curriculum is guided by each student’s Individual Education Plan; as a result, students are ineligible to receive credit for this course towards a state sanctioned diploma.

 

Foreign Language______________________________________________

The Chelsea School foreign language program offers one completer pathway to graduation and the ability to receive a state sanctioned diploma.  The program focuses on the functional language in selected situations.  Further Chelsea recognizes the difficulty many of our students face when tackling a foreign language so that the pacing of these courses are appropriate to the needs of the students while allowing them to gain an understanding of the linguistic, cultural, and grammatical concepts of studying a second language.

Ceramics provides students the opportunity to use clay to create original work. Students have the opportunity to progress from simple to complex hand-building techniques, to throwing on the potter's wheel. Artistic and design skills are emphasized as well as form and function.

Television II continues to develop an understanding and ability to implement the skills first introduced in Television I.  In this course students will receive the training and skills necessary to begin to independently implement the skills needed to produce their own productions as well as work on other independent projects.

TV Media Internship

Television Media Internship offers students an opportunity to earn credit while independently implementing the skills obtained in the first two television courses.  The students will earn credit by working independently on projects outside of Chelsea School.  These projects may be completed at partner facilities such as Access Montgomery, the local cable access affiliate.  Students must solicit independent evaluations from supervising technicians and submit them to their mentor/teacher at Chelsea School to receive their grade.
